The REVOLUTION Unlimited Pro Controller limited-edition Call of Duty®: Black Ops Cold War review

Updated: Dec 20, 2020

The REVOLUTION Unlimited Pro Controller limited-edition Call of Duty®: Black Ops Cold War, combines all of NACON's technological expertise in competitive gaming on PS4 and PC, as well as PS5 compatibility. Boasting a wireless game mode, it's the ideal choice for the most demanding gamers. Joining forces with Call of Duty, this limited edition controller adds a really sleek looking COD inspired design and every purchase of the controller also unlocks unique in game content for Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War.

Inside the box, this controller comes with a protective shell and a customisation case. This case contains additional thumbsticks and shaft diameters, giving the user a choice between the standard concave thumbsticks (similar to DualShock 4 controllers), or a convex style thumbstick which increases or decreases sensitivity based on user preference. In addition to these interchangeable thumbsticks, the case also contains a range of different weights that the user can add to concealed compartments on the back of the controller handles. This allows the user to give their controller a more personalised feel by completely changing how it holds in your hands. I found this a particularly important and appealing feature for me as I love a heavy controller, so I immediately popped in the heaviest weights and away I went.

In terms of how this thing looks and feels, I love it! It's a perfect size and shape, feeling almost as though it was made with my hands in mind. My fingers follow the curves of the controller perfectly. The asymmetric thumbsticks and the matte finish really make this one of the best controllers on the market in terms of hand feel. The COD design really helps to set this controller apart from it’s competition; the light ring around the right thumbstick is a nice touch too. Personally, I love the look of this unique controller and would say there are few on the market that look and feel better. As with most pro controllers these days there are additional buttons on the back of the gamepad which the user can map to perform any action they like, I did find myself pressing these occasionally by accident when the action got real intense due to not being used to their placement. I do suspect however, that this will get better with time.

Setup of the NACON Revolution Unlimited Pro controller could hardly be more simple. Featuring both a wired and wireless mode, you simply either plug in the USB-C to USB cord, or for wireless mode, simply plug in the wireless dongle and away you go. Software is available for PC, get it HERE. To use this software, your controller must be connected to the PC via USB and the switch on the back be moved to position 2, but it allows you to make a platitude of adjustments to the controller including, but not limited to:

  • Adjust the settings of the left and right sticks

  • Reverse Y-axis of the sticks

  • Select 4 or 8 way movement of the directional pad

  • Re-map all buttons (excluding PS, SHARE, OPTIONS and touch pad buttons)

  • Map buttons to the 4 x shortcut buttons

  • Create and load up to 4 x custom profiles onto your controller, then switch between them during game play

  • Adjust the dead-band on the L2 and R2 triggers

  • Independently adjust the vibration intensity on the left and right-hand grips

  • Adjust the backlight around the right stick

This allows the player to set their controller up to suit their play style and give them an edge over your competition when playing online games such as COD.

Pros:

  • Sleek design, perfect for the Call of Duty fans out there

  • Massive level of customisation and remapping to suit your play style

  • Responsive

  • Great feel and weight

  • Easy setup

Cons:

  • Profiles and button mapping can be confusing and a little intimidating until you get used to it

  • Rear button placement

It is worth noting however, that both of the cons here though; I suspect are due to the user rather than the hardware itself.

Overall, whether its taking down hoards of zombies, giving yourself a tactical edge against online opponents in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, or even making racing games feel a little more comfortable rue to rear button placements, the NACON Revolution Unlimited Pro Call of Duty Limited Edition PS4 controller is in my opinion, the best PS4 controller on the market. An upgrade on the DualShock 4 in almost every single way; this controller looks, feels and handles great.

The NACON Revolution Unlimited Pro Call of Duty Limited Edition controller is currently discounted at The Gamesmen, and you can get yours HERE, this is the perfect Christmas gift for yourself, a loved one or any Call of Duty obsessed person in your life.
