On January 29th, Sony unveiled the next line of PS Plus Essential games for February. These games will be available to download to all PS Plus members on February 4th.
PS Plus's February Games
Payday 3 (PS5)
High on Life (PS4 & PS5)
Pac-Man World Re-Pac (PS4 & PS5)
Payday 3
Payday 3 first came out in September 2023 to a mixed critical reception. It was the first game of the series to come out after the original developers, Overkill Software, became a subsidiary of Starbreeze Studios. The game is an online co-op first-person shooter where you and other players take part in different heists across different locations.
The game is considered lacklustre, especially compared to Payday 2. Reviewers at the time of release said that it did not offer much content compared to other rival online shooters. The PC launch on Steam was disastrous due to the huge number of players on the servers, making the game almost unplayable. The influx of players returned to Payday 2 instead of tackling the newest entry.
Despite the mixed reception, Payday 3 will be available to PS Plus members this February for no additional cost.
High on Life
Starting on Xbox and PC, High on Life is a stylised first-person shooter that does not hold back on its adult humour. The game's narrative is about an alien cartel that invades Earth, intending to abduct humanity and use the species for their own psychedelic, drug-taking needs. The game is as outrageous as it sounds, which makes sense because Justin Roiland, the controversial entertainer behind Rick and Morty, created it.
High on Life launched on Xbox Game Pass and became the most popular game on the service during its opening week. However, the game's humour was a point of contention for many reviewers. Some found it hilarious, and others felt it dragged too long, leading people to call the humour excruciating.
Is High on Life a hilarious and entertaining narrative experience, or does it pull one too many punches that make the game feel like a one-note experience? PS Plus gamers can make that choice when High on Life comes to PS Plus in February.
Pac-Man World Re-Pac
Pac-Man World Re-Pac came out on PlayStation, Xbox, Switch and PC in August 2022. The game is a remake of the 1999 cult classic PS1 platformer Pac-Man World, published by Namco. Bandai Namco has recently been paying homage to their heritage by making remasters of their beloved classics like Katamari Damacy and Klonoa. However, this game does not fit with the previous examples because Pac-Man World Re-Pac is a built-from-the-ground-up remake, not a remaster.
Because this is a remake, the game makes many changes to the original, but it does not feel alien compared to the original. Pac-Man can now walk in all directions; instead of eight-way stick controls like on the PS1, the game includes different difficulty modes, and completion requirements differ in this version compared to the original.
I have always wanted to play this game, and now I have the best excuse to play it finally. If you are a fan of platformers like me, Pac-Man World Re-Pac will be available to all PS Plus members this February.
PS Plus's January Games
The new lineup also means that you do not have long to claim the PS Plus Essential games from January. You can still add titles from last month to your library up until February 3rd.
