iPhone 16 Pro Review

Updated: 13 hours ago

After recently upgrading to the iPhone 16 Pro its felt like stepping into a refined version of the tech I rely on daily a sharper, faster, and more versatile companion that gets things done and even surprises me. Apple has taken a collection of smart, subtle changes and created a device that fits right into my life, but it really shines when I push its limits.

I won’t lie I tend to push my phone hard. With my previous phones, the battery has always been a source of anxiety by the end of a long day. With the iPhone 16 Pro, I’m not constantly checking that percentage, even when I’m bouncing between calls, messages, emails, and, yes, a bit of gaming when I can sneak it in. The battery life here isn’t earth shattering, but it feels just right. It’s dependable in a way that makes the phone feel like less of a device and more like an extension of my day. I can be fully immersed without worrying about finding a charger or rationing my screen time.

Gaming on the iPhone has always been good, and was taken up a notch last year with the introduction of Apple Silicone. But the new Game Mode enhances that experience even further. I was skeptical at first, thinking, “How much better can it really be?” But it’s clear. Apple put real thought into making gaming on the iPhone 16 range feel immersive and uninterrupted. Notifications are minimised, background processes are managed, and everything is streamlined for gaming. I’ve been diving into games like Resident Evil 4 and Call of Duty: Mobile and Grid Legends, and the experience feels smoother than I expected on a phone.

But the real magic happens when I pair it with a Backbone controller. When I snap that on, my iPhone transforms into a fully fledged handheld console. It’s easy to forget I’m using a phone at all. With AAA games on the App Store now being optimized for iOS, I can actually see the day coming when most new titles are available on iPhone right alongside consoles. It’s almost surreal to play games that were once reserved for consoles on a device that fits in my pocket, and the Backbone makes it feel like I’ve got a true console alternative.

The camera upgrades were the first thing about the iPhone 16 Pro that caught my attention. The dedicated camera button on the side? Game changer. Instead of unlocking the phone, fumbling through the camera app, or trying to hit the volume button just right, it’s all right there, ready to go. Capturing those spontaneous moments is effortless. Having a 3 year old running around at home, the ability to quickly capture the moment is very important, moments I probably would’ve missed with even a slight delay.

The instant shutter response is another feature that’s quietly revolutionized my camera experience. I didn’t realize how much I was holding back on the shutter in past iPhones, waiting for the moment to “settle” so I wouldn’t blur the shot. With the iPhone 16 Pro, there’s no hesitation. Every picture feels sharp and professional, as if I had a DSLR tucked away in my pocket.

Apple didn’t just stop at visuals, they went all in on audio tools too, which might just be my favorite surprise here. With the new background noise blocking feature, I’m able to shoot videos even in less than ideal environments. Recently, I recorded a video outdoors with the usual city noise in the background, but after a quick adjustment with the built-in audio tools, it felt like I’d shot it in a studio.

It’s the kind of detail you don’t fully appreciate until you experience it. The level of control over audio means I can actually shoot a professional-grade video without needing a bunch of external gear, which is fantastic when I’m on the go. These tools make video editing easy enough that I’m creating polished content without a laptop or additional software, just my phone, which still feels a bit surreal.

When I first saw this year’s new color, I wasn’t sold. I liked last year’s natural titanium, but this one just didn’t hit right. However, the color has a way of catching the light in subtle, almost elegant ways that started to grow on me over time. Now, I love it. It’s the kind of detail that feels like a quiet luxury, adding a bit of personality to an already sleek device. Apple does these colors well, and while it’s not a huge feature, it’s the kind of thing that enhances the overall vibe of using the phone. It’s no longer just a phone; it’s a statement piece.

Reflecting on the utility of my iPhone 15 Pro during my recent trip to Japan, I found it made my life so much easier. With its seamless connectivity, reliable navigation, and quick access to translation tools, it handled everything I needed effortlessly. It’s the kind of trip that made me realize how much I rely on these devices. [Link to that article here]

The iPhone 16 Pro may look like a modest upgrade on paper, but living with it shows just how much these improvements matter. It’s a refined tool for day to day tasks, with a host of features that surprise me with just how useful they are. The Game Mode and Backbone pairing is genuinely changing the way I approach mobile gaming, giving me an experience that’s as close to a portable console as I’ve ever had with a phone. And the camera? It’s an instant classic, capturing memories in ways I didn’t think a phone could.

So, while these are “small” improvements on paper, they’ve translated into a better, more user friendly experience that aligns with what I actually want to do with my phone. Whether it’s snapping photos, gaming, creating content, or just enjoying the feel of a well made device, the iPhone 16 Pro nails it.
