Skyrim, Skyrim, Skyrim….. It's one of the most popular games ever made, it's been released over 14 times, yet still, Bethesda have found a way to justify releasing it yet another time. It’s something I'm both not a fan of, whilst also being a big fan of it and a sucker for Skyrim 15.0
We all know what Skyrim is! Almost all of us have played it at some point, those of us that have not have still heard of it and have probably watched some footage of it. It is for this reason that I'm not going to waste my time explaining what it's all about. If you don't know already, you probably don't want to.
Let me instead tell you that if you love Skyrim, or if you're looking to pick it up for the first time, This new anniversary edition is absolutely the best way to play one of the best games of all time. Second only to Resident Evil 4, Skyrim is my 2nd most purchased game of all time. I have now owned it for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, PC, PC again in the form of the special edition, and now once again they have sucked me in with the complete edition on PlayStation 5. This is something I’m not alone in, most of us have owned Skyrim more than once which is a massive reflection on just how good a game it is.
One of the biggest changes in this version is the ability to use mods just like on PC, mods were available on PS4 etc, however, it was missing a large chunk and ran into a lot of issues when trying to load a large number at once. This complete edition, thanks to the power of the PS5 and Series X, no longer struggles here. In fact it excels. I have so far loaded about 80 mods with the game showing no signs of stopping.
Despite the fact that this is called an anniversary edition, it's only just, half way through writing this review, that it occurred to me that SKYRIM IS 10 YEARS OLD !!! Let that sink in for a moment. Usually, you picture a game you played 10 years ago and you think it looked photorealistic, when in reality it was pong… Skyrim came out 10 years ago, and it still looks incredible today, never more so than in this anniversary edition.
Playing this Anniversary edition has reminded me exactly why I love Skyrim, and why I've felt the need to own it so many times. It is an incredible game. Even now on my 10th or so playthrough I'm discovering things I never noticed before. The anniversary edition doesn't necessarily contain anything the special edition didn't, so if you already own the special edition on a next gen console or PC, I wouldn't recommend buying it, however if you're making the leap from last gen to next gen, or standard edition, then I'd absolutely suggest you buy this newest version of the game. The series X version of the standard edition ran at the same resolution and the same FPS where as the PS5 version ran at the same resolution but only 30FPS (without mods)
I just can't believe Skyrim is 10 years old, not only does it make me feel old AF, but it shocks me how well it holds up today. If you're one of the few weirdos that has not yet played the game, do it now. What are you waiting for? Its 20th anniversary?
If you weren't already sold on buying the Skyrim Anniversary edition, let me say one thing……..
FISHING!
This new version will not only release with all the games previously released DLC, but will also feature a new “minigame”, this is of course fishing, about the only thing missing from the previous versions of the game.
It's also worth mentioning, that due to Microsoft acquisition of Bethesda this is potentially the last Elder Scrolls game to release on PlayStation, so if you're a collector, it could be one to buy for that reason alone.
