Dreams is a game creation system developed by Media Molecule and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for the PlayStation 4. The game puts focus on 'play, create and share', and allows players to create user-generated content in the form of fully-fledged video games, video game logic and mechanics, assets, 3D sculptures, music, art and more. This content can then be shared or remixed to be used in other's creations. [1]
It seems that Media Molecule have a vendetta against your ordinary game developers, so much so that their goal is to give the end user the power and in fact become their own developer! Have you ever played The Sims? If you're at all like me, you would have spent about 10% of your time doing rather questionable things such as putting people in pools and deleting ladders etc, and 90% of your time creating the perfect house, customising every little detail until you're happy with the end result. Am I right? Now imagine that creativity on steroids..... That is Dreams!
"Come with me, And you'll be, In a world of pure imagination. Take a look, And you'll see, Into your imagination. We'll begin, With a spin, Traveling in, The world of my creation. What we'll see, Will defy, Explanation. If you want to view paradise, Simply look around and view it, Anything you want to, do it, Want to change the world? There's nothing to it."
After a brief walk-through on what Dreams is about and how to interact with the world, you're given a choice - Play or Create. I started with create.
This took me to a world of pure imagination (cue Willie Wonka song in my head). By no means am I a "creator", yet I found dreams so intuitive and so easy to create amazing things almost immediately.
I've spent the last 12 months hearing about Dreams and all the amazing things that people have been creating. I've been thinking to myself, wow there are some clever people out there; but the truth is, the clever people are Media Molecule. You don't have to be particularly tech savvy to create your own fully functioning video game using Dreams. It's truly revolutionary. It takes the ideas that Little Big Planet and Super Mario Maker use and expands on them almost infinitely! You are only limited by your own imagination.
I've never found it more difficult during a review to put in to words how I feel when reviewing a game! I mean, usually you can just describe them as good to look at, great to handle, amazing graphics etc. Dreams is all of those things and much, much more. It left me feeling truly in awe of just what this technology could mean for the future of gaming! This D.I.Y video game culture could very well become a big part of what video games are, going forward. I mean rather than getting a single video game, Dreams offers you unlimited video games. Create, Share, Explore. Whatever you do, you'll be having a ball.
We've seen similar concepts to this in other games, such as the Far Cry series. Fans of the recent Far Cry games will be very familiar with the concept of creating your own 3D level/map, but Dreams truly takes that to the next level. The sheer number of things you get to do, the minor adjustments, the pre-fabricated structures and the amount of materials that you have access to is definitely one of the many things that sets this game apart. It's important to note, that despite how good Dreams is for creation, it is in fact a game. The endless number of levels you can play is simply mind blowing.
I would absolutely recommend that you give Dreams a try, It's more than a new release -it's a monumental event in gaming, It feels like a game that should be on PC, yet they've managed to achieve it on console. I feel like Dreams will be remembered as a true turning point in gaming history.
Overall 9.5/10
